Our Poteau Bandit League's fourth-grade team was in an exciting game Saturday in Greenwood, Ark. The Pirates scored on the opening drive, which was capped by Cole Hensley's 10-yard touchdown run. Colton Williamson's conversion was good, but was called back due to a holding penalty, so Poteau stayed ahead 6-0.
Two Greenwood possessions later, the host team scored and made its PAT to take an 8-6 lead. By the way, kicking an extra point is worth two points in Bandit League play.
After Greenwood upped the lead to 16-6, Williamson's 50-yard scamper to paydirt cut Poteau's deficit to 16-12. However, the conversion failed as Williamson was tackled just short of the end zone.
The never-say-die Pirates used their defense to give us one last shot at a come-from-behind win. Poteau held Greenwood at the Poteau 10-yard line with 32 seconds left to play in the game. On the second play of the possession, it's like a Chinese fire drill, with we coaches yelling at the players to get the ball snapped before time expires. Quarterback jacques Adams took the snap from center Layne Clark just before the clock hit zero. Jacques handed the ball off to Dax McMillin, who then handed it to Williamson on a reverse.
Thanks to a big block by McMillin as well as by linemen Connor Moss, Keaton Mann and Grant Ford, Williamson went flying around the right side and was heading down the sideline for a game-winning touchdown. From out of nowhere, a Greenwood player caught up with him and tackled him at the Greenwood 28 to end the game — and give us heartbreak.
You talk about being spent. I and coach Colin Eatmon were running down the sidelines on that play, yelling, “He's got it! He's got it!” Then, the heartbreak set in for us. I felt like I went 10 rounds with Mike Tyson — all on just one miracle play, that almost worked for us. I don't know if we could have called it “The Music City Miracle” — where the Tennessee Titans used a freak play on the final play of the game to down the Buffalo Bills to win a playoff game. I bet we would have called it “The Greenwood Gallop” had Colton been able to make it all the way.
All Poteau's Bandit League teams will be at home Saturday with Van Buren (Ark.) Green, with games beginning at noon. I don't have much time to collect myself before doing it all over once more.
Save the world — recycle.
God bless our troops and veterans
Have a great weekend.
