TAHLEQUAH â€” The Heavener Wolves cross country team was ninth and the Lady Wolves 11th at the Early Bird Invitational on Thursday.
The Wolves had 218 points, finishing behind champion and host Tahlequah (30 points). Sequoyah-Tahlequah was second (74 points), followed by Kansas (101), Life Way Christian (134), Pryor (142), Fort Smith (Ark.) Northside (149), Jay (154) and Sallisaw (168).
Arturo Ortega was the highest finisher for the Wolves as he was 23rd (15:05.3) in Thursday's 4k run. Frank Cruz was 41st (16:09.55), Estaban Martinez was 62nd (17:36.98), Daniel Hernandez was 76th (18:37.08), James Cinocca was 83rd (19:04.62), James Horner was 87th (19:47.65), Octavio Sanchez was 96th (21:32.4) and Devon Matthews was 98th (22:21.43).
The Lady Wolves scored 318 points. The team champions were the host Lady Tigers, who scored 42 points. Sequoyah-Tahlequah was runner-up (101 points), followed by Warner (105), Collinsville (119), Stilwell (119), Keys (Park Hill) (124), Pryor (151), Jay (168), Fort Smith Northside (238) and Kansas (300).
Barbara Johnson crossed the finish line first in Thursday's 2,000-meter run for Heavener as she placed 46th (9;41.18). Shaelyn Earley was 80th (10:22.14), Gloriann Staines was 87th (10:40.67), Johna Enger was 97th (11:05.21), Brenda Macias was 123rd (13:31.93) and Sarah Genevie was 130th (15:12.4).
The Heavener runners will return to action next Saturday when they run in the Henryetta Invitational.
