Heavener hopes for happy homecoming win over Gore tonight

September 14, 2012

The Heavener Wolves football team is hoping for happy homecoming tonight when it entertains the Gore Pirates at 7:30 p.m. at Harvey Stadium. Homecoming festivities will begin at 7 p.m.
Carl Lee, Heavener's first-year coach, is hoping that the players do not get too caught up in homecoming and forget about the Pirates.
“We're trying to keep it as even keel as we can,” Lee said. “It's just another ball game. If we take care of business, we'll be all right. We need to enjoy homecoming, but we still have to focus on the game.”
The Wolves (1-1) suffered a heart-breaking home-opening loss last Friday night, falling 28-21 to the Hartshorne Miners.
It was a game Lee believed the Wolves won in all aspects except the most important one — the scoreboard. He believes the Wolves let one slip away.
“That's an understatement,” Lee said. “When you're able to almost double your offensive productivity and give yourself a chance to win, you have to feel good. We had too many mistakes and turnovers. It felt like we beat ourselves.
"We just have to focus more carefully in what we do. If we do that, we can be a good team. We have to cut out our mental mistakes.”
Lee said the players really were down after the loss.
“The kids took it really hard,” he said. “It showed that our kids cared. We've had a good week of practice. We're more mentally focused. You never want to lose, but it could be a good thing. We thought that's what this (loss) did for us. We just need to come play more focused and try to win a ball game.”
The Pirates (2-0) are coming in with a season-opening 35-19 win over Panama on Aug. 30, then followed that up with 25-0 home-opening win over Mounds last Friday night.
“They're a good football team,” Lee said. “They have good players. We're going to have to be on our game to give ourselves a chance to win. I think we match up well with them in the things that we do. It's going to be a good test for us.”
