The Heavener Lady Wolves softball team started out 22-0-1, won the school's first-ever county softball title last month as well as winning the Class 5A district and regional tournaments. That's a pretty good reason why they believe they can bring home the state title Tuesday night.
“The season has been a dream season,” said Savannah Steelman, Heavener's only senior member of the team. “We did lose at county to Pocola, but I had no doubt in my mind that we could come back and beat them for the county championship. It felt great to be on the team to finally be county champs. I knew after we accomplished getting over the loss and winning county that even the sky wasn't the limit. Now, we are headed to state with a district and regional title. We are ready to make Heavener history and win a game at state, but with this team we will keep going and never give up after that one win.”
The Lady Wolves, who will play Purcell at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Class 5A State Tournament quarterfinals at the Ballfields at Firelake in Shawnee, won the regional tournament in dramatic fashion as Kendra Davis led off the seventh inning with a home run to break a 14-all tie.
