HEAVENER — With just a pair of wins Thursday afternoon at the Class 5A Regional Tournament in McAlester, the Heavener Lady Wolves won the regional title — and trip to today's state tournament at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. The Lady Wolves (27-9) will meet Blanchard at 10 a.m. this morning, with three more wins winning a state title.
Heavener won the regional title on Tiffany Taylor's RBI single in the ninth inning, which scored Elyssa Turner from third base, to down Henryetta. Senior rover, and soon-to-be Carl Albert State College Lady Viking, Logan Hinds said it is hard to put into words the feeling felt at that moment.
“I can't describe the feeling,” she said. “I was really happy that we won. I'm looking forward to it.”
Today's state-tournament appearance helps overshadow some of the frustrating things for the Lady Wolves, like losing in this season's LeFlore County Tournament game to Poteau.
“We seniors hadn't been to state at all,” Hinds said. “This was going to be our last chance, and we were excited that we're getting to go.”
“I'm excited to go out with being at the state tournament,” senior shortstop Jordan Kannady said.
But the Lady Wolves aren't just excited to be there. They're expecting to win it.
“I think we have a chance,” senior catcher Heather Moore said. “I think we're playing our best right now.”
The Lady Wolves lost an 11-10 slugfest one week ago today, but Moore said that contest helped them out when it came to the regional tournament 48 hours later.
“It got us ready (for the regional),” she said. “I'm glad we played the game.”
By approximately 4:30 to 5 p.m. this afternoon, the Lady Wolves could be crowned Class 5A state champions. All three seniors tried to describe what that feeling may be like.
“I think that would be totally awesome, and I think we can do it,” Kannady said.
“I can't imagine what I'm going to feel like,” Hinds said. “I'm probably going to go crazy, but I'm really excited about our chances.”
“It would be unbelievable,” Moore said. “I can't think of a better way to go out. We're three wins away. I'm excited, especially being a senior.”
