HEAVENER â€” While the Heavener Lady Wolves soccer team did not make the playoffs, there were still a lot of positives from which to build in preparation for the 2013 season.
For starters, the win-loss record was better, 3-5 overall and 2-4 in District 4A-6.
â€śWe made a lot of progress,â€ť senior goaltender Courtney Smith said. â€śWe won more games than we did in the past three years I've been here. It was an honor to work with all these girls, and to come out with some wins â€” including a district win. We have really come far. I had a blast. I love soccer so much.â€ť
Another way the Lady Wolves have turned the corner is improving on the little things.
â€śWe learned how to talk to each other,â€ť senior Karina Sanjuan said. â€śWe learned how to pass the ball batter.â€ť
The graduating seniors hope they have laid the cornerstone for the program's improvement to continue.
â€śWe would like to think we've taught them to play hard every game, and to have communication with each other during games,â€ť senior Abigail Bravo said.
A lot of people believe that sports imitates life. Soccer has done just that to one senior.
â€śIt taught us to be patient,â€ť Reyna Burgos said. â€śNot everybody learns as quick as everybody else. It taught me how to be patient with my teammates, and also to better communicate with my teammates. Communication is a big key.â€ť
A concern Heavener Coach Lee Oldaker is fearing with the Lady Wolves is numbers dropping over the next few years. One of his senior Lady Wolves believes that he does not need to worry about that.
â€śI don't think that's going to happen,â€ť senior Juliana Vazquez said. â€śI would tell girls that soccer is really easy to learn.â€ť
While the Lady Wolves did not make the playoffs, the Wolves did â€” playing LeFlore County rival Poteau in the Class 4A state quarterfinals Friday night at Harvey Stadium. The Lady Wolves have been there to lend support.
â€śWe're coming to their games they're playing right now,â€ť senior Airam Hernandez said. â€śWe're showing up at their practices.â€ť
