Heavener teams handled in 3A District Tournament

February 21, 2012

KANSAS, Okla. — The postseason did not begin the way the Heavener High School basketball teams had hoped.
The Lady Wolves and Wolves were handled by the host Kansas teams in Friday night's Class 3A District Tournament. The Lady Comets defeated the Lady Wolves 69-27, while the Comets then beat the Wolves 52-36.
But as district runners-up, the Heavener teams both advanced to this week's Class 3A Regional Tournament, which will get to begin on their home court. The Lady Wolves and Wolves will play the Atoka Lady Wampus Cats and Wampus Cats at 1:30 and 3 p.m., respectively, Thursday afternoon. Both Heavener teams must win, then win Friday and Saturday afternoon in the consolation championship game at the new Wilburton Gym to advance to next week's Class 3A Area Tournament at Fort Gibson.
In the girls' game, the Lady Comets jumped out to a 17-6 lead after one quarter and had a 32-10 halftime advantage.
In the boys' contest, the Comets had a 22-13 lead after one quarter, 30-19 at halftime and 39-23 after three periods.
