HEAVENER — The “second season,” as it's dubbed, will begin at 6:30 p.m. tonight for the Heavener Wolves soccer team as it entertains Riverfield at Harvey Stadium in the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs.
The Wolves are undefeated to this point (10-0), which is making for a lot of fun — especially for the seniors.
“It has been great,” senior Carlos Gonzalez said. “We're undefeated. I think we can win a state championship.”
“We've just been having fun, but we're working and playing hard,” senior Neftali Bravo said.
The bad news for the Wolves is that don't know too much about tonight's opponent.
“We really don't know anything about them,” senior Rey Diaz said. “We don't know what we're up against. But if we play our game, and make our shots, we'll be fine.”
However, being at home will help the Wolves' chances of making the state quarterfinals.
“It's great to be at home,” senior Marco Meza said. “We haven't had a home playoff game.”
If the Wolves can run their record to 14-0, it will mean a Class 4A state soccer championship trophy will come home to the trophy case.
“That would be great because it would be the first state championship in soccer for Heavener,” senior Jesus Benitez said. “It would show that we can compete with anybody.”
However, something to not overlook is a potential LeFlore County showdown Friday night in the state quarterfinals with Poteau — should the Pirates beat Oologah and the Wolves beat Riverfield.
“It would be great,” senior Daniel Zamora said. “We and Poteau have a pretty good rivalry against each other. I just hope we can beat them again, if we both win (tonight).”
