The Monroe Lady Eagles qualified for the 2013 Organization of Rural Elementary Schools State Tournament by winning the Division IV Tournament on Thursday in Fanshawe. Before the weekend ended, they were joined at state by four other LeFlore County teams.
In the Division II Area Tournament at McAlester’s Frink-Chambers Middle School, the Hodgen teams did it the hard way, but made this week’s ORES State Tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs took advantage of the fact they had two chances to make state. After losing the title game 32-29 on Friday to Brushy, the Lady Bulldogs came back the next day to beat Idabel Denison 35-20 to win the consolation championship to earn a trip to state, where they will meet Moffett at 8 tonight at St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee.
The Bulldogs had to win twice last weekend to make state, and that’s just what they did. The ’Dogs defeated Broken Bow Holly Creek 49-12 in Friday’s consolation semifinal, then downed Denison 43-35 in the consolation championship to earn a trip to state. The Bulldogs will meet Stilwell Zion at 2 this afternoon at St. Gregory’s University.
Two other county teams, the Monroe Eagles and the Fanshawe Lady Grizzlies, did the same thing the Bulldogs did — made state as consolation champions.
In Saturday afternoon’s consolation championships in the Division IV Tournament in Fanshawe, the Eagles defeated the host Grizzlies 51-21 in the consolation championship to earn a trip to state. The Eagles will face Hulbert Shady Grove at noon today at Shawnee Middle School to begin play in the 2013 ORES State Tournament.
The Lady Eagles, who haven’t played since Thursday night’s area title game victory, will open their state tournament action with a game against Swink at 7 tonight at Shawnee Middle School.
The Lady Grizzlies withstood a third-quarter charge by Stidham to post a 45-30 victory in the consolation finals of the Division IV Area Tournament in Fanshawe. The Lady Grizzlies will meet Wickliffe at 6 tonight in the opening round of the state tournament at Shawnee Middle School.
One more ORES team at state, while not from LeFlore County, does have some county connections.
Former Arkoma Schools athlete Cianna Titsworth and her McAlester Tannehill team will play in the ORES Division III State Tournament this week. Tannehill will meet Stilwell Rocky Mountain at 5 this afternoon at Seminole State College in an opening-round game. Titsworth is daughter of John Allen Titsworth and Cari Titsworth (stepmother) and the granddaughter of John Titsworth and Susan Kelly Smith.
Titsworth’s coach, James Youngblood, who is formerly from Moffett and once coached at Spiro, took Moffett to three ORES State Tournaments. This will be his first trip to state with Tannehill.
