OKLAHOMA CITY — The Roan Ranger made his Remington Park debut in Wednesday’s $30,000 allowance/optional claiming event, handling the one-mile test to wear down rivals in the stretch for victory. Jockey Cliff Berry was up to gain his second win of the night and move closer to 4,000 career thoroughbred wins.
Owned by Lucky Dog Stables of Hot Springs, Ark., and trained by Cody Autrey, The Roan Ranger stalked the pace-setting Puckster through the first six furlongs of the race. Leaving the final turn, the 3-year-old colt was asked for his run by Berry and he methodically wore down Puckster to gain the lead in the final yards. He then fended off a late charge by Would You to prevail by three-quarters of a length in 1:38.05 over the fast track. Puckster tried to lead throughout and was a game third.
Away as the 6-5 wagering favorite, The Roan Ranger paid $4.60 to win, $3.60 to place and $2.80 to show. Would You paid $12 to place and $6.80 to show. Puckster paid $3.80 to show.
A Kentucky-bred by Exchange Rate from the Crafty Prospector mare Crafty Marian, The Roan Ranger won his fourth career race from a dozen starts and made $17,898 to move his career earnings to $106,368. The gray colt was entered into the race for the $20,000 claiming price and he was purchased out of the event by new owner Danny Caldwell of Poteau and trainer Federico Villafranco.
