Last week, one high school basketball team, the Arkoma Lady Mustangs, represented LeFlore County at state. This week, local fans will get to triple their pleasure at state.
The Howe Lions and the Spiro High School team made their respective state tournaments, which will begin Thursday in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.
The Lions, who lost their Class 2A Area Tournament finals 60-49 to Preston on Friday night, beat county rival Pocola 57-49 to win the consolation finals Saturday night at the Muskogee Civic Center.
The Lions will meet Oklahoma City Millwood at 7 p.m. Thursday at Oklahoma City University in the Class 2A State Tournament quarterfinals.
The Bulldogs won the Class 3A Area Tournament on Friday night in Skiatook with a 52-44 victory over the Nowata Ironmen. The â€™Dogs will meet Verdigris in the state quarterfinals at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Midwest City Carl Albert High School's Titan Fieldhouse.
The Lady Bulldogs had a lot to deal with in Saturday night's Class 3A Area Tournament consolation finals against Kansas. Lighting problems at the Skiatook gym forced all action to be moved 10 miles east to Collinsville, but the Lady Bulldogs prevailed over the Lady Comets 50-47. Spiro lost to No. 1 Adair in Friday night's area finals 74-43.
The Lady Bulldogs will meet Washington at 2 p.m. Thursday at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany in the Class 3A State Tournament.
The seasons ended for the Pocola Indinas and the Howe Lady Lions in the Class 2A Area Tournament. The Lady Lions lost 58-45 to the Dale Lady Pirates on Friday afternoon in the consolation semifinals.
The Indians beat the Pirates 66-50 on Friday afternoon before losing to the Lions in the consolation finals.
