Howe girls, Wister boys fall in regional title games; Panama, Wister girls, Pocola boys eliminated

February 28, 2012

ADA — Ada High School's Cougar Activity Center was not very kind to LeFlore County's Class 2A basketball teams playing there Friday and Saturday in the Class 2A Regional Tournament.
The Howe Lady Lions and the Wister Wildcats lost their regional title games Saturday night. The Lady Lions fell 40-29 to Amber-Pocasset, while the ‘Cats lost 71-47 to Haworth.
But both Lady Lions (25-2) and the Wildcats (19-8) still will be in this week's Class 2A Area Tournament at the new Wilburton High School Gym. Howe's girls will meet Sallisaw-Central at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by the Wister boys against Porter Consolidated at 8 p.m. Both teams must win three games in three days to make it to next week's Class 2A State Tournament.
Three other county teams — the Panama Lady Razorbacks, the Wister Lady Wildcats and the Pocola Indians — saw their seasons end on Friday.
The Panama girls lost 43-36 to Haworth, the Wister girls fell 53-41 to Rattan and Rattan's boys handled the Pocola boys 76-48.
In Saturday night's girls' regional title game, the Lady Panthers doubled up the Lady Lions 12-6 after one period en route to a 21-10 halftime lead.
But the Lady Lions roared back in the second half. Howe outscored Amber-Pocasset 14-8 over the first 12:30 of the second half to cut the deficit to 29-24 with 4:30 left to play in the game. However, that was as close as the Lady Lions got.
Amber-Pocasset finished the game with an 11-5 run to seal the deal.
In the boys' regional title game, the Lions jumped out to a 16-11 lead after one period, but from there they slowly but surely continued to increase their lead.
Haworth had a 34-22 halftime lead and a 57-38 lead going into the final period.
In the Panama girls' game, the Lady Razorbacks (12-12) led 8-2 after one period, but the Lady Lions outscored them 41-28 the rest of the way.
In the Wister girls' contest, the Lady Rams jumped out to a 10-6 lead after one period on the Lady ‘Cats (12-15), but Wister cut the deficit to 19-17 at halftime.
But after Rattan put its lead back up to three points at 37-34 after three periods, the Lady Rams won going away by outscoring the Lady Wildcats 16-7 in the final quarter.
In the Pocola boys' game, the Rams only led 10-6 after one period over the Indians (20-6), but for most of the second quarter Pocola's shooting went awry while Rattan's did not. That allowed for the Rams to slowly pull away as the game progressed.
