WILBURTON — Six LeFlore County basketball teams came away with some hardware Friday and Saturday at the 2013 Eastern Oklahoma State College Classic when it finally ended this past weekend after it had its final three days rescheduled from earlier this month due to this month's wintry and icy weather.
Of those six teams, three of them brought home championships — the Howe teams in the Gold Bracket and the Arkoma Mustangs in the Blue Bracket. The Lions beat fellow county rival Leflore 57-24 Saturday night at EOSC's Claud C. Dunlap Fieldhouse, while the Lady Lions clawed the Gans Lady Grizzlies 70-31. The Mustangs held off a late Red Oak rally to down the Eagles 43-40.
Besides the Savages, the Arkoma Lady Mustangs were also runners-up as they lost 69-40 to the Red Oak Lady Eagles in the Blue Bracket title game.
The first of the six teams to bring home hardware came on Friday night when the Whitesboro Bulldogs handled the Haileyville Warriors 65-48 in the Blue Bracket third-place game at EOSC. The Lady Bulldogs couldn't make it a sweep of the third-place games as they lost 36-32 to the Smithville Lady Braves.
