February 24, 2014

HOWE — The Howe High School basketball teams took the first step en route to what they hope will be state championships. The Lady Lions and Lions handled the Wister teams Saturday night at the Howe Gym to sweep titles in the Class 2A District Tournament.
The Lady Lions and Lions will play Colcord on Thursday night at 6:30 and 8 p.m., respectively, in the Class 2A Regional Tournament championship semifinals at Tahlequah High School. The winners not only will play for the regional titles Saturday night, but will automatically qualify for next week's area tournament at the Muskogee Civic Center.
The Wister teams stayed alive in the playoffs by sweeping the district tournament's make-or-break games against Gore on Friday night. The Lady Wildcats handled the Lady Pirates 48-29, but the ’Cats had to hold off the Pirates 44-41.
The Wister teams also will be at the Class 2A Regional Tournament in Tahlequah, with both teams facing Chouteau-Mazie in the consolation quarterfinals at 1:30 p.m. (girls) and 3 p.m. (boys), respectively, on Thursday. The winners also must win Friday and Saturday afternoons in Tahlequah to win the consolation championships and make it to next week's Class 2A Area Tournament in Muskogee.
