I hope my favorite weekend to hunt brings me some success

November 7, 2012

BEAR-ING DOWN FOR A HAT TRICK — Former Poteau Lady Pirates basketball player and golfer Kelsey Weaver, who three years ago became the first female to harvest a bear, got her third bear on a recent hunt near Three Sticks. Photo submitted by George Midgley

This weekend is one of my favorite weekends of the year to hunt. I have always had good luck on the weekend closest to Nov. 10. The bucks are chasing does around all over the place. I always try to sit in my stand all day at least one day on this weekend every year.
Dan Carter and I will join my ol' buddy, Butch Parks, at Clayton to hunt my lease for the weekend. Last year on this weekend, we saw nine bucks chasing does in one day. I hope it will be that good again this year. Even if it isn’t, we will have a great time and eat really well.

My awesome wife got my phone working, so I got in touch with Kelsey Weaver and got the lowdown on her bear hunting. She was the first female to take a bear in Oklahoma three years ago, and has not slowed down since.
Kelsey is now a 19-year-old sophomore college student at Northeastern Oklahoma State University in Tahlequah studying criminal justice. She still likes to spend her spare time building lifelong memories while hunting. This is the third year in a row she has taken a bear with a crossbow. This year, she shot her bear near Three Sticks on an evening hunt.
Keep it up, young lady!
Have a great week!
