Imogene Webb Garrett, 96, passed away
Monday, Oct. 24, 2011. at her residence in
Hawley, Texas. Graveside services will be
held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 29, at Spiro
City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-7
p.m. Thursday at Elliott-Hamil Funeral
Home, Abilene, Texas.
Imogene was born Aug. 20, 1915, in
Spiro to Lee and Nanna Webb. She grew
up in Webb Town and graduated from Spiro High School
where she was the high scorer on the basketball team.
Imogene graduated from college in Durant. She interviewed
with Ulyss Garrett for a teaching position. She got
the job and a husband. Imogene married Ulyss in 1940 in
Las Vegas. They lived a couple of years in Dallas, then
moved back to their home country. From 1947 to 1952 she
lived in Spiro and taught school. Imogene joined Eastern
Star in Spiro and remained a member until the time of her
In 1952, she moved to Alhambra, Calif., with her husband.
While in California, they also lived in Glendora,
Holtville, and Riverside. In each of those locations, she
taught first grade and was active in her local church. In
Riverside, she was involved in Womanâ€™s Club and PEO.
She was also active in several educational organizations.
Imogene was an accomplished pianist and used her
talents wherever she lived. As a girl she played the piano
at her fatherâ€™s silent movie theatre. Later she accompanied
many church and school vocal groups, including a quartet
in which her husband sang.
In 1994, Imogene made her last earthly move to the
state of Texas. She has now made her final and best move
into the arms of her dear Savior.
Survivors include her two daughters, Deanna Thomas
and husband, Doug of Hawley, Texas, and Peggy Strong
and husband, Ed of Rainbow, Calif.; her two grandsons,
Joe Manor and wife, Laura of Riverside, and Trevor
Thomas of Abilene; and one great-grandson, Joey Manor
