While I was gearing up this past weekend for the 81st LeFlore County Tournament, the state's longest-running basketball tournament, being the baseball fan I am, it was a sorrowful one for me in that regard.
Three legendary baseball figures died over the weekend.
Leading this list was Stan Musial, one of the greatest St. Louis Cardinals players to ever don the red and white. “Stan the Man,” as he was known, was one of my late father's favorite players — and not just because he was a Cardinals fan.
However, Musial wasn't the first of the three to pass. Earlier on Saturday, former Baltimore Orioles manager Earl Weaver passed.
On Sunday, one of college baseball greatest coaches, Ron Fraser, died. I always put him in the same mold of the likes of Oklahoma State's legendary coach, Gary Ward. It always seemed like Fraser's Miami Hurricanes were not just one of the best teams in college baseball, but were College World Series regulars, and he never had a losing season in 30 years at the helm.
For all three of you gentlemen, rest in peace — and thank you for giving us memories we'll always treasure.
