LeFlore County high school basketball came to an end on Saturday, but not the way everyone had hoped.
For starters, the Howe Lady Lions missed out on a trip to state when they lost 39-30 to the Amber-Pocasset Lady Panthers in the Class 2A Area Tournament Saturday night at the new Wilburton High School Gym.
But that pales to the sorrowful news which happened earlier that day near Big Cedar. First-year Whitesboro Boys Coach Wayne Tucker was killed in a single-car accident on Oklahoma State Highway 63 between Muse and Big Cedar.
Let me just send my condolences to the coach's family as well as the Whitesboro Public Schools family on the loss of Wayne. I enjoyed working with him, and it's just hard to believe he's no longer with us. Rest in peace, Coach.
A word to LeFlore County coaches, if you will have any seniors sign letters of intent, please let me know. I will be glad to do stories at the signing.
I need to have at least 24 hours, preferably 48 to 72 hours notice, of where and when the signing will take place.
Coaches can call me at (918) 647-3188, Ext. 30 (office) or (580) 341-8419 (cell), or email me at email@example.com.
With today's column, this marks the final edition of Cage Notes for the 2011-12 season. I wish it could have ended with some teams at state — and most definitely with no sorrowful news of a fatal accident.
But let me just thank all you coaches and fans who helped our publication cover our teams and hoopsters this season. I could not have done it without y'all's help.
So, until November when the 2012-13 season commences, may all your shots hit the nylon, and enjoy your spring seasons and the off-season. Take care!
