It wasn't pretty, but Tulsa gets homecoming win over Rice; After bye week, Golden Hurricane will meet Arkansas Nov. 3 in Fayetteville

October 22, 2012

TULSA — An old sports adage says, “The good teams will find a way to win.” No truer words could have been spoken as dusk approached Saturday at Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
After being outplayed, and never ahead, in Saturday afternoon's homecoming football game for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane against the Rice Owls, it took only one play to reverse all that.
After Rice place-kicker Chris Boswell missed his second field-goal attempt of the game with 2:55 left in the game and the Owls leading 24-21, the Golden Hurricane used one play to perk up both the Tulsa sideline and stands. Ja'Terian Douglas rambled 75 yards, breaking at least three tackles along the way, to get the ball down to the Rice 5-yard line. Two plays later, Alex Singleton took it in from a yard out with 1:31 left to play to lift Tulsa to a 28-24 come-from-behind victory in Conference USA action.
“Wow, my head is spinning,” said Bill Blankenship, Tulsa's coach and Spiro native, after Saturday's thriller. “I have to be honest with you. I can't remember the last time I've seen somebody show the kind of effort and put his team on their shoulders like JT [Douglas] did on that last run. It was unbelievable. It was just an incredible run. It was a great thing to be a part of.”
After the bye week, Tulsa will get to play in its second straight homecoming game as they will provide the opposition for the Arkansas Razorbacks at 11:21 a.m. Nov. 3 at Frank Broyles Field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium for their homecoming. The game will be televised on the SEC Network stations.
