For the first time in four seasons, there's going to be an 11th game for the Poteau Pirates football team.
The Pirates (9-1) will entertain the Cleveland Tigers (5-5) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Costner Stadium.
The Pirates sealed up a home playoff game in last week's 44-14 road win over the Tulsa Rogers Ropers at S.E. Williams Stadium in Tulsa.
“It was a good night,” Poteau coach Greg Werner said. “We've had three games in a row where we've been able to play everybody, and won handily. It's been a good stretch. We're pretty healthy, but we're going to have to get ready because those days [of blowout wins] are over. We're ready going into the playoffs.”
However, the weekend got sweeter when the Sallisaw Black Diamonds defeated the Fort Gibson Tigers 47-28 last Friday night at Sallisaw's Perry F. Lattimore Stadium. That put the Pirates, the Black Diamonds and the Tulsa Cascia Hall Commandos [who defeated the Broken Bow Savages 40-7 last Friday] in a three-way tie for the top spot in District 4A-4. On district points, the Pirates were awarded the top seed for the playoffs, and the district title.
“A lot of people said that we shared the district title,” Werner said. “That's not true. That's what I told people because there's a system for breaking ties. The tie was broken, and we're district champions. It's a great accomplishment for our kids. The big thing is we get two home playoff games, and that's always huge come playoff time.”
