It's time to get that card

September 24, 2012

We still have a week of September left, and September is National Library Card Sign Up month, so if you don’t have a card, come in and begin enjoying the many ways your local library and the entire Southeastern Oklahoma Public Library System can serve your entertainment and information needs.
To apply for a library card, you will need photo identification such as a driver’s license and a proof of your address. Children 16 and younger must have a parent or custodial adult with them to co-register for their card. The fact is, library cards can be obtained year around, but the fall season and the return to school is the perfect time to substantially increase your literary, video, audio and magazine assets through a little credit-sized card for which you will NOT receive a monthly bill.
Your library card can be used in any library in the system from Arkoma to Valliant, Stigler to Broken Bow, McAlester to Heavener. For families visiting or camping in this section of the state for example, we have a courier program whereby our customer members may check out items at one system library and return the items to another.
Our inter-library loan program is very popular though it is unusual in that there is a fee for its use. From your home library, any book that circulates within the system or beyond may be requested. Items are  sent to your home library for $1.50 fee when they arrive and are checked out. This “sharing” of materials increases the use of materials and access for our users. In fact, that makes Buckley Public Library an access point for hundreds of thousands of books. Taxpayers are indeed getting their money’s worth.
We are making an infrequent change in our Pre-K program schedule this next week. Due to scheduling conflicts in the auditorium, we will have the Pre-K Story Time on Monday, Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. Our TLC program for children and their families will be at the usual 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
This month’s Jump Start program for families with young children will be Tuesday, Sept. 26, at from 5:30 until 6:30 pm. In addition to a light meal, and book giveaway, the story time and take-home craft will feature dinosaurs. Join us for this fun and free program. We remind our readers that printed activity calendars are available at the library or dates for the current month can be checked on line.
As our system’s mission states, “The Southeastern Public Library System of Oklahoma strives to be the place where people explore yesterday’s heritage, today’s information and tomorrow’s dreams.”
Come in and apply for a card, and just see what’s happening at Buckley.
Carole Gill is the children and teen's librarian at Buckley Library in Poteau.
