Jake Louis Smith, 93 of Spiro departed this life to start a new journey June 26, 2013, in his home with family and friends surrounding him and holding his hand.
He was born Oct. 23, 1919, to Albert and Nell Smith in Spiro. He accepted Christ as his savior and joined the First United Methodist Church of Spiro in 2012. He shared 68 years with the love of his life, Velda Ruth (Cantwell) Smith. He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Upon his return home at the end of the war, they built a wonderful life together working on their ranch. Jake retired from Gordonâ€™s Transports and a long career in the trucking industry but never lost his love of old trucks. He received the Founders Award for the starting of the Oklahomaâ€™s Chapter of American Historical Truck Society. Jake and Velda Ruth enjoyed traveling to the truck shows and making new friends. He and Velda Ruth also embarked on the real estate development at Ridgewood Estates that is nearly filled with homes today.
Jake was preceded in death by his wife, Velda Ruth Smith; his parents; a brother, Jack Smith of Archer City, Texas; and a sister, Bessie Gail Roberts of Tulsa.
Survivors include his sister, Virginia Lou Fields of Tulsa; daughter, Judy Martin of Springfield, Mo.; son, Jake Smith and wife, Sheila, of Spiro; and daughter, Laura Nell Cavin and husband, Jimmie, also of Spiro; and three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
The service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at the Mallory-Martin Chapel of Spiro with a Â graveside service following under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home with military honors conducted by Spiro VFW Post 4884.
The family offers a very special thanks to the caregivers who have enriched Jakeâ€™s life and allowed him to remain in his home. Love and thanks to Ann Clough, Viola Harrell, Wanda Perkins, Crystal Salazar, Melissa Ollar, Tessa Fingerhut and to Advantage Hospice of Poteau for their support in a difficult time.
Pallbearers will be Terry Williams, Eddie Cowan, Jim Christy, David Christy, Duane Christian and Charles Campbell.
The family will visit with friends at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Friday.
