Jean E. Simkins, 85, of Conway, Ark., died March 25, 2012. Born April 19, 1926, in Malvern, Ark., she was the daughter of George R. and Amanda Thompson Britt. A member of Zion Baptist Church, she taught at Arkansas School for the Blind for over 20 years before retiring in 1987 then taught at the Mayflower School District for a number of years. She loved her grandchildren, church, reading and soap operas.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 60 years, William Simkins; two daughters, Shirley Overturf and Joyce Brown; a brother, George Robert Britt Jr.; sister, Jessie Mae Hart; and a great-grandson, Tyler Brown. Survivors are two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Taylor and Judy Lynn Taber, both of Conway; a son, William Barrett Simkins III and his wife, Harriett, of Warren, Ark.; 24 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 29, in the chapel of Griffin Leggett Funeral Home, Conway, with Rev. Leroy Billy officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Fort Smith.Â Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.Â Memorials may be made to Zion Baptist Church, P.O.
