Funeral services for JoAnn Newburn will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2014, at The Assembly in Broken Arrow. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa under the direction of Hayhurst Funeral Home.
Lois JoAnn Newburn was born Aug. 17, 1931, in Poteau, the daughter of Homer and Mittie (Stigall) Boyd. She died at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa on Tuesday, May 6, 2014. She was 82.
The former Miss JoAnn Boyd was a 1950 graduate of Poteau High School. She was working at the LeFlore County Courthouse as a stenographer when she met Armon Newburn. They were married on June 14, 1952, in Poteau and spent the next 54 years in ministry, traveling and serving churches throughout the state of Oklahoma. As a pastor’s wife, JoAnn played the piano, organ and sang. She and Armon pastored churches in Wister, Muldrow, Duncan and Tulsa, then moved to Oklahoma City to serve the Oklahoma District as district superintendents for 18 years. She was faithful in ministry always right beside her husband wherever the ministry took them, whether Oklahoma, the nation or the world and they literally traveled the world speaking and ministering. She also served on the boards of Highlands Child Placement Center and Central Bible College. She enjoyed lunches with her friends and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
JoAnn was an encourager, whether it was in her role as a pastor’s wife, friend, mother or grandmother. She always had a smile and a hug for everyone she met and many called her “mom” or “mama.” Her heart was huge and always ready to help in any way. It will be hard to imagine life without her. She will be greatly missed by friends, neighbors and family.
She is survived by a son, Greg Newburn and wife Susan, Broken Arrow; Daughter, Lisa Parsons, Tulsa; grandchildren, Ashley Thompson and husband Joel, Broken Arrow, Allison Newburn, Denver, Colo., Emily, Amanda and Nicholas Parsons, Tulsa; and great-grandchild, Kellan Thompson.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her precious Armon; parents; a brother, Tom Boyd; and a sister, Lorene Duff.
The family requests memorials to GL2014, Stronger, 3500 West New Orleans St., Broken Arrow, OK 74011.
