La Fiesta pronounced fun and fabulous success

September 19, 2011

Glen Holt, former St.
Louis Public Library Director
says “For every $1 spent on
the library, a community sees
an average of $4 in return.”
How often do you get a 300
percent increase on your
investments?
At the recent Library
Fiesta Fundraiser hosted by
the Friends of Buckley
Library, raising funds for the
new library’s furnishings is
as much an investment in the
future of the community, as it
is in bookshelves, computer
tables and chairs.
Thursday night’s funfilled
fiesta brought in
approximately $6,500
towards the Buckley Friends’
several thousand-dollar furnishings
goal. Although this
is the second such fundraiser
hosted by the Buckley
Friends, co-chair of the Fiesta
event, Gerry Roberts says,
“We hope to make it an
annual event.”
The fundraiser held at a
festively decorated Kerr
Conference Center was as
ablaze with bright colors and
mariachi music, as it was
with joyful friends and enthusiastic
donors.
It’s no wonder the supportive
library patrons were
enthusiastic. Several of the
spirited bidders opened up
their wallets as well as their
hearts to the project.
Most of the bidding was
friendly as the ever humorous
Jeff Jensen auctioned off
packages that included a
vacation at Mt. Magazine
Lodge, with a delicious dinner
at the Lodges’ Skycrest
Restaurant, a getaway at the
Sleepy Hollow Cabins with
dinner at Papa Pablano’s
Mexican Café in Broken
Bow, and a cabin stay at
Wister Lake State Park that
included breakfast and dinner
at Fisherman’s Corner.
The Reba McEntire package,
which included a Reba
concert at the BOK Center in
Tulsa in November, a sleepover
at the Doubletree Hotel
and a meal at Baxter’s Urban
Grill, brought out the competitive
nature in Darali
Mixon and Steve Holton.
Although both Reba fans
were formidable opponents
in the bidding war, Holton
triumphantly prevailed.
Area artists Charles
Meeks, Michael Riley and
Teresa Farrington each presented
original artwork banners
to be auctioned off.
According to event co-chair
Marilyn VanBockel, the proceeds
from the banners
brought in $810. Additional
silent auction items included
a couple of much-coveted
OU Football tickets and a
load of topsoil.
The biggest ticket item of
the evening was a 6-night
7-day condo stay in the gated
community of Stoney Creek
on the beautiful Amelia
Island in Florida. Dr. Jim Dunn and his wife Charlene paid
the handsome price of $1,600 for the exquisite vacation package
donated by Marlene Dial of Regional Development
Associates. The package also included a $500 travel stipend
courtesy of the Buckley Library Friends.
The fundraiser, considered a marvelous success by the
group who coordinated the event and attendees alike, will
help continue the Friends’ mission as advocates for the
library.
In addition to their special fundraising efforts for the
library furnishings, the Friend’s regular participation in
Library functions include sponsoring the online book club,
register kids in summer reading programs, provide refreshments
for events and maintaining the landscaping.
If you are interested in becoming a Friend of Buckley
Library you can join as a Friend for $5, Family for $15, a
Sustaining Member for $25 and a Patron for $100.
If you are still debating on whether to join, you should
know that according to statistics U. S. Public Libraries outnumber
Amazon customers by almost 5 to 1. Each day U.S.
Libraries circulate nearly 4 times more items than Amazon
handles.
According to Norman Cousins, “A library is the delivery
room for the birth of ideas, a place where history comes to
live.” An educated community lends to productivity and
prosperity, invest in yours in watch your community grow.
