Lady Pirate basketball duo with chance to make USA Junior National Team

Poteau Lady Pirate basketball players Kaitlan Standridge and Colleen Peterson will have an opportunity to go play some summer hoops.The Lady Pirate duo have been invited to tryout to make the United States Junior National Basketball Team in tryouts which will take place May 20 at Lighthouse Sports Complex in Oklahoma City.For those fortunate enough to make the team, those players will advance to the U.S. International Sports Festival 2012, which will take place July 16-22 in Columbus, Ohio. Once there, players will compete in a weeklong super competitive international pool play tournament, then a double-elimination international championship.The USA Junior Nationals is considered the top amateur high school basketball competition in the country. It is viewed as an entry level to international competition, and for high school athletes seeking college basketball scholarship opportunities.This past season, Standridge and Peterson were the top two scorers for the Lady Pirates, who were 8-20, were fifth at the 2012 LeFlore County Tournament, won their second Class 4A District Tournament and were regional tournament consolation champions — putting them three wins from a trip to state.Standridge led Poteau with an 11.8 points-per-game average. She had an average of 6.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists. She had 12 block shots and 37 steals.Peterson was right behind in scoring with 9.6 points per game and a 10.5 rebounds-per-game average, just missing out on a double-double average. She had an average of an assist per game to go with her 20 blocked shots and 38 steals.In the 2010-11 season, Standridge and Peterson were the No. 2 and 3 leading scorers. Standridge averaged 6.6 points a game, 1.9 rebounds and an assist a game during Poteau's 9-15 season. She had a blocked shot and 26 steals.Peterson had a 6.2-point, 5.8-rebound average during the 2010-11 season. She had about an assist per game as well as 12 blocked shots and 39 steals.
