Late home run dooms Poteau girls in upset bid over No. 1 Tahlequah

HEART-BREAKING LOSS — Poteau pitcher RaeLynn Caldwell, front, delivers a pitch while first baseman Chelsey Campbell prepares to make a play during Tuesday afternoon's game against Tahlequah. An adage goes, “Close only counts in horseshoes.” However, close is the exact word to use in describing Tuesday's Poteau Lady Pirates home game against Class 5A's top-ranked Tahlequah Lady Tigers.
The Lady Pirates were one out away from not only back-to-back home wins, but knocking off the No. 1 team in Class 5A. Then, the blast.
Tahlequah's Kirsten Chase hit the first pitch she saw from Poteau's RaeLynn Caldwell in the seventh inning over the left-field fence for a two-run home run which ended up being the game winning hit in a 2-1 victory.
Although the pitch doomed the Lady Pirates (3-4), it didn't ruin the day Caldwell (3-4) had. She was perfect for 6.1 innings, only gave up two hits and struck out 11 batters — just 24 hours after she fanned 14 Westville batters in Monday's home opener.
