Late home run dooms Poteau girls in upset bid over No. 1 Tahlequah
An adage goes, “Close only counts in horseshoes.” However, close is the exact word to use in describing Tuesday's Poteau Lady Pirates home game against Class 5A's top-ranked Tahlequah Lady Tigers. The Lady Pirates were one out away from not only back-to-back home wins, but knocking off the No. 1 team in Class 5A. Then, the blast.Tahlequah's Kirsten Chase hit the first pitch she saw from Poteau's RaeLynn Caldwell in the seventh inning over the left-field fence for a two-run home run which ended up being the game winning hit in a 2-1 victory.Although the pitch doomed the Lady Pirates (3-4), it didn't ruin the day Caldwell (3-4) had. She was perfect for 6.1 innings, only gave up two hits and struck out 11 batters — just 24 hours after she fanned 14 Westville batters in Monday's home opener.
