Leflore basketball coach heading north to Sallisaw

June 2, 2012

TODD HACKLER

Leflore High School basketball coach Todd Hackler has always wanted to coach at larger classification schools, and now he will get his chance.
Hackler was hired late last month as the new Sallisaw Black Diamonds Basketball Coach.
“It's a larger and bigger school,” Hackler said. “I've always wanted to coach at a big school. I came from Poteau, so I'm used to the big-school atmosphere. I wanted a change, and it's going to be a great opportunity.”
Hackler has been the last three years at Leflore, the first two as both boys basketball and baseball coach. It's the success in such a short time with the Savages which he will treasure most.
“I guess the main thing is when we started out, we hadn't won very many games,” he said. “My first year (2009-10), we won six games. The next year (2010-11), we won 11 games, and this past year we won 20. We kept improving each year. That's going to be hard to beat. I'm going to miss those kids, but I think they can win 15 to 20 games again. It's going to be hard to leave. It was a tough decision, but I'm excited and looking forward to the task ahead of me.”
