WILBURTON â€” The phrase, â€śmiraculous comeback,â€ť is heard quite often in the world of sports. The Leflore Savages basketball team experienced one Monday at the Eastern Oklahoma State College Classic at EOSC's Claud C. Dunlap Fieldhouse.
Down 44-31 entering the final period against the Battiest Panthers, the Savages outscored them 24-9 in the fourth quarter to snatch a 55-53 win away from Battiest to advance to the championship semifinals of the gold bracket.
The game that preceded Leflore's had nothing close to a miraculous comeback as the Howe Lady Lions routed the Battiest Lady Panthers 74-30 in a blue bracket opening-round contest.
Across town, the news was not as good for the Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs, who fell 54-41 to the Pittsburg Lady Panthers at the Wilburton High School Gym in a gold bracket opening-round game.
Tuesday's action was filled with LeFlore County teams.
In gold bracket action, Leflore faced Red Oak at EOSC, while Arkoma met Buffalo Valley at the WHS Gym.
In blue bracket games, Bokoshe's girls played Haileyville at WHS. In boys' action in the blue bracket, Arkoma met Clayton in a rematch of the Class A District Tournament from last season, Howe faced Panola and Whitesboro played Haileyville.
Today's games will be consolation semifinals in both brackets, with all games played at Claud C. Dunlap Fieldhouse. Whitesboro's girls will play the loser of the Arkoma-Buffalo Valley game at 4 this afternoon in a gold bracket consolation semifinal. The Arkoma-Clayton boys loser will play the Howe-Panola loser atr 5:20 this afternoon in a blue boys consolation semifinal, which will be followed by the other blue bracket girls consolation semifinal between the Red Oak junior varsity, a 70-38 loser to Gans on Monday afternoon, and the Bokoshe-Haileyville loser at 6:40 p.m.
