LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Tournament week is here

September 17, 2013

It's finally here — the 2013 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament, which is taking place this year in Panama.
For the first time in four years (three of those since I've been here), the field for the title would appear to be wide open.
Poteau is the favorite, but may not have the cakewalk it has had in dominating the field for the last four years — and yes, that's a credit to the six seniors who graduated last spring, who never lost a fast-pitch county tournament game in their four years.
The next four seeded-teams — No. 2 Pocola, No. 3 Panama, No. 4 Wister and No. 5 Heavener — have a legitimate shot at winning it as well. Poteau only beat Pocola 2-0 a couple of weeks ago. Panama's girls are two-time state qualifiers, and shooting for a third straight trip to state. Wister has beaten Pocola, which has beaten Heavener. Panama has defeated Wister.
Talihina's girls are coming off a third-place finish Saturday at the Kiowa Tournament and have been playing better of late.
Howe entered the tournament with 11 wins, but lost to Whitesboro in Thursday's three-way — and Arkoma followed that up by beating Whitesboro before losing to Howe.
One of Howe's seven losses is to Cameron, which beat the Lady Lions 6-1 last month in the Robbers Cave Shootout in Wilburton.
So, this week may be the most competitve county fast-pitch tournament in a few years. I know I'm looking forward to it.
