It has been almost one year since Martha Louise LaFaver, dearest mother and grandmother, was released from pain and worries on Wednesday, July 27, 2013.
She died of natural causes in her daughter’s home in Grapevine, Texas, with her daughter by her side. Martha was born to Hazel Hickman Decker and adoptive father, Alfred Hickman, in Heavener Sept. 12, 1925. The family later moved to Howe, where Martha grew up with four aunts and many cousins living nearby. As an adult, she lived most of her life in Oklahoma City, although her gypsy spirit led her to explore life across the country from Memphis to Los Angeles. She had an amazing memory and could add numbers more quickly in her head than most can on a calculator, which served her well in over 35 years of work as a waitress. She could prepare a delicious meal in minutes; chocolate gravy will forever be a joyous memory for her daughter. She had a tender heart and generous spirit and rarely went to visit family without gifts in hand. Her presence is deeply missed by her daughter, Dianne LaFaver, and granddaughter, Laura Day.
Other surviving family members who mourn her passing include her youngest brother, Billy Joe Hickman and his sons, Billy and Cecil Dale Hickman of Poteau. She also is survived by many more cousins, nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her parents; three younger brothers, Melvin, Floyd and L.D.; her ex-husband, Paul Wallace LaFaver; and son, Jimmy Joe Yarbrough.
Plans are underway for a celebration of Martha’s Life to be held in Poteau. Call (817) 994-5790 for details.
