Martinez/Ducan scholarship softball tournament planned

Deputy Dustin Duncan
Memorial Scholarship
Fund Co-Ed Softball
Tournament will be
October 8 at the Panama
softball fields. entry fee is
$100 per team. The tournament
will consist of
teams of seven men and
three women using 44 core
balls. Senior league and
Ultra 2 bats are prohibited.
There is a three home run
limit, home runs scored
after the limit will be
counted as singles. There
will be a home run derby
at noon.
Proceeds from the tournament
will be used to
fund a memorial scholarship
in the names of
Officer Danny Martinez
Jr. and Deputy Dustin
Duncan. The tournament
has been endorsed by the
families of both Officer
Martinez and Deputy
Deputy Dustin Duncan
lost his life in a motor
vehicle accident on
Highway 270, near Wister.
Deputy Duncan’s patrol
collided with an oncoming
pickup truck, cutting short
the Deputy’s life. His
watched ended February
4, 2008. He was 28.
Officer Martinez was
killed in the line of duty
while helping a mother to
retrieve her child from the
residence of her estranged
boyfriend. Officer Martinez
served for many years with
the Poteau, Panama, Shady
Point, Wister, and Fort
Smith Police Departments.
His watch ended on March
23, 2007. He was 33.
The Memor ial
Scholarship Fund Co-Ed
Tournament has been organized
to honor the memory
of both fallen law enforcement
officials by setting up
memorial scholarships in
their name in order for area
youths to further their educations.
