Massive flooding puts hunters at risk
LeFlore County Emergency Management, EMS, the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department and other law enforcement agencies are in the south part of the county assisting a number of people stranded by flood waters. Reports that massive flooding between Cedar Lake and Big Cedar as well as in the Wister area have washed away camping trailers and vehicles. There have been a number of swift water rescues since approximately 8 p.m. This following a flood warning issued earlier by the National Weather Service. The areas are very rural and are currently inundated with people who are in the area for deer season, as gun season opened on Saturday. Authorities are asking that if you are not in the area do not attempt to go there as you could find yourself stranded as well. Below is the warning issued by the weather service. FLASH FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR PUSHMATAHA AND SOUTHERN LE FLORE COUNTIES UNTIL 1030 PM CST... AT 908 PM CST... NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED THUNDERSTORMS WITH VERY HEAVY RAIN OVER THE WARNED AREA. 4 TO 6 INCHES OF RAINFALL HAS ALREADY OCCURRED WITH AN ADDITIONAL 1 TO 2 INCHES POSSIBLE. SIGNIFICANT FLOODING HAS BEEN REPORTED IN TALIHINA... HONOBIA... OCTAVIA AND HONEYBEE. NUMEROUS ROAD CLOSURES AND SEVERAL HIGH WATER RESCUES HAVE ALSO BEEN REPORTED IN THESE AREAS. RUNOFF FROM THIS EXCESSIVE RAINFALL WILL CAUSE FLASH FLOODING TO OCCUR. SOME LOCATIONS THAT WILL EXPERIENCE FLASH FLOODING INCLUDE... ANTLERS... CLAYTON... ALBION... BIG CEDAR... CLAYTON LAKE STATE PARK... CLOUDY... DUNBAR... HEAVENER... HEAVENER RUNESTONE STATE PARK... HOWE... KELLOND... KIAMICHI... KOSOMA... LAKE WISTER STATE PARK... MOYERS... MUSE... NASHOBA... OCTAVIA... OLETA... RATTAN... SNOW... STANLEY... TALIHINA... TALIMENA STATE PARK... TUSKAHOMA... WHITESBORO AND WISTER. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE WATER COVERS THE ROAD TO UNKNOWN DEPTHS. IT ONLY TAKES TWO FEET OF RUSHING WATER TO CARRY AWAY MOST SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND PICKUPS. TAKE A DIFFERENT ROUTE TO REACH YOUR DESTINATION OR WAIT UNTIL THE WATER RECEDES. REMEMBER... MOST FLOOD RELATED DEATHS OCCUR IN AUTOMOBILES. LOW WATER CROSSINGS IN HILLY TERRAIN ARE ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS IN HEAVY RAIN. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TRAVEL ACROSS FLOODED ROADS. FIND ALTERNATE ROUTES. IT ONLY TAKES A FEW INCHES OF SWIFTLY FLOWING WATER TO CARRY VEHICLES AWAY.
