Midget Regional-Tournament host Panama victorious on opening night, but Poteau falls

July 4, 2012

PANAMA — The 2012 OK Kids Midget Regional Tournament got underway in fine fashion for the Panama Boomers, who defeated the Vian Wolverines 10-8.
The Boomers were slated to play the Madill Cats, who doubled up the Asher Indians 8-4 earlier in the night, in the winner's-bracket semfinals Tuesday night, with that winner playing in the winner's-bracket final at 8 p.m. Thursday.
In Monday's other game, the Stilwell Indians defeated the Poteau Outlaws 7-0, which put the Indians in a winner's-bracket semfinal Tuesday afternoon against the Okemah Panthers, with that winner playing the Panama-Madill winner at 8 p.m. Thursday in the winner's-bracket final.
The Outlaws will play an elimination game at 4:30 p.m. Thursday against the Panama-Madill loser, and must win that game and four more to win the regional title — and make state.
In Panama's win, the Boomers trailed 1-0 in the first inning, but scored three runs in their half for a 3-1 lead.
After the Wolverines regained the lead at 4-3 with a three-run second inning, the Boomers tied the game at 4-4 after two innings.
After Vian regained the lead once more at 7-4 in the third inning, Panama took the lead for good with a three-run third inning, a single run in the fourth inning and two more runs in the fifth — which was highlighted by Knute Dumas' two-run home run — for a 10-7 lead going into the sixth inning.
For the game, Brandon Black was 2-for-4 with a run scored, Dumas was 2-for-4 with a homer and two runs scored, Dawson Blair was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Jaybon Mankin was 2-for-2 with a run scored.
Kade Johnson got the win as he recorded 12 strikeouts.
In Poteau's loss, Stilwell jumped out to a 3-0 lead after an inning to take control of the game.
In defeat, Jordan Terry's four-inning, one-out single was the only hit the Outlaws could muster.
