Mud races carry big payoff at Balloonfest

October 10, 2011

The Swamp Pit, a mud pit so deep that no driver yet has bested it. Any driver who successfully traverses The Swamp Pit receives $750 cash.

Ever since there have been trucks
and mud, people have been combining
the two for sport and recreation.
This year’s Balloonfest is no exception.
On Saturday, October 22, the
Poteau Balloonfest will play host to
AMMP Motorsports’ Third Annual
Rumble on the River mud race. The
event features the top ten mud racers
in the United States tearing through
four different 300-foot-long mud pits
including “The Swamp Pit”, a six
foot deep mud pit that has never
before been bested. The Swamp Pit
at the Poteau Balloonfest is only the
third such pit constructed for professional
competition and any driver
who successfully clears it will win
$750 cash on the spot. Thanks to the
generous sponsors of the Poteau
Balloonfest, the purse for the overall
winner of the competition is $5,000.
Also, as an added bonus to the
competition, children 7 years old and
under can compete in the Little Tikes
powerwheel mud races. There’s no
entry fee for children and the winner
takes home a $100 purse.
“None of this could be possible
without the help of our many sponsors,
the city of Poteau, and our volunteers.”
said Poteau Chamber of
Commerce CEO Karen Wages.
