The Poteau Police Department will
begin a new era today as the newly named
Chief of Police begins his first day on the
Stephen Fruen, 35, of Poteau, was unanimously
chosen by the Poteau City Council
as the city's new chief during a special
meeting Monday night.
Fruen, who was one of the three applicants
considered for the position, was recommended
by the Police Committee after
reviewing the resumes during the last two
weeks. The resumes were submitted by
currently employed Poteau Police personnel
as a chance for internal advancement.
According to Mayor Jeff Shockley, the
acceptance of resumes from currently
employed personnel was in part due to the
requirement that the chief live within the
Fruen will hold the position of chief
until the next election date that the city can
hold in the spring of 2013. The elected
position is a four-year term and the scheduled
chief of police election will be held in
According to Tommy Robertson, David
White and Clay Bennett, members of the
Police Committee, the decision to recommend
Fruen to the city council for the position
was due to his ambition, integrity,
enthusiasm and public relations skills.
Fruen, who is now recorded as the youngest
ever chief of police in Poteau, was also
recommended due to the longevity he
could provide to the position.
