New senior tight end liking being a Poteau Pirate player

When Broken Bow's Greg Werner was hired as the new Poteau Pirates' football coach, not only was there a transition for him, but also for his senior tight end son, Jay.
While there was skepticism at first, Jay has learned to embrace being a Poteau Pirate.
“At first it was tough because I thought to myself, 'What in the world, going to one of our own rivals in our district,'” Jay said. “As time progressed, it's gone a lot smoother than I thought it would be. It's definitely been a bigger change. I've definitely enjoyed it — so far.”
The new Poteau senior tight end said the community and his new teammates made the transition a lot smoother.
“Just the people made the change easier,” Werner said. “The people and players here are great. The coaches have done a great job . But the biggest part (of the easier transition) was the people. Without them, it would have been a lot harder than it actually was.”
Another factor that helped was that Werner knew a lot of his new teammates from playing against them the last few years as a Broken Bow Savage.
“I played my freshmen, sophomore and junior years, so I knew most of these guys,” he said. “I just didn't know them personally. It is a big difference knowing someone personally than just shaking their hands. They've been great. They've really brought me in, and made me feel like part of the team. So, it has been a good change.”
