Not a bad way to get the basketball season under way

November 8, 2011

Last week, LeFlore County saw the first of hundreds of basketball games get tipped off to begin the 2011-12 season. What caught my eyes?
The Leflore Savages took perennial Class B power Red Oak to the limit Thursday night before losing to the Eagles after the Savages won their season opener.
The Howe High School teams both had to overcome deficits against Smithville to each post road victories Friday night to get the season off on the right foot.
The same could be said for the Cameron Yellowjackets Friday night, who overcame a double-digit, first-quarter deficit to down the homestanding McCurtain Bulldogs.
On the other hand, some teams are still looking for their first wins of the season — the Leflore Lady Savages, the Cameron Lady ’Jackets, the Whitesboro Bulldogs (for new coach Wayne Tucker) and the Wister teams.
We'll see what happens this week on the hardwood.
Howe at Cameron, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
Smithville at Whitesboro, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
McCurtain at Wister, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
Kinta at Whitesboro, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
Leflore at Buffalo Valley, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
Wister at Howe, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
Whitesboro at Clayton, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
