Olympics making me reminisce about my volleyball days

August 10, 2012

ames, especially beach volleyball. We used to play beach volleyball every day at 3 p.m. at Reece's Cabinet Shop for 10 years. I MEAN every day as long as the temperature was above 32 degrees — and it wasn't lightning.
We loved it, and had a great time — but we were highly competitive. One day, I went up to block a spike by Cornel “Stagecoach Brake Handle” Reece, and he hit it straight down. I just couldn't block it because I was at a blocking angle and he hit it down the line (in non-volleyball English, he crushed the ball straight ahead). If you know Cornel, then you know every sport he plays, he thinks he's in the Olympics — and has only one speed, fast. That's how he does everything, hard and fast.
We both look at each other across the net after his “Thunder Spikes,” and he would always say, “Yeah, I'll spike on your mama, and steal your lunch money!” What? Nobody talks about my mama! Now, it was fixing to get ugly.
My partner, Gary “The Great White Hunter” Morris serves Cornel. Cornel passes the ball to his partner, “Big Al” Alan McDaniel. “Big Al” sets the ball up for Cornel, who rushes the net for the spike. But I was there to revenge for my poor ol' mama, and defend her honor. I go up for the block well over the top of the net, and Cornel spikes the ball. I felt like I was in the movie, “Meet the Parents.”
Cornel hits the ball hard, but his “fan belt finger” jams straight into my left ring finger (Note: Cornel's “fan belt finger” was the result of him working on his hot rod and it shaved the sides off making it shaped like a shovel).
I came down with a knot on my finger the size of a golf ball, and it's been there for 13 years now! The thing about my knot is if I hit it or get too close to a high-powered microwave oven when it's on, it shoots a volt of electricity all the way up my left arm and my left eye twitches — and I about pee my pants.
I finally went to the doctor, and they are going to do surgery on Monday. Come to find out, it's a cyst, and it's on some nerves. So, the doctor has to put me out so I don't move around to take it out!
