STILLWATER — The old football adage says, “Defense wins championships.” While it wasn't a championship the Oklahoma State Cowboys football team won Saturday afternoon at Boone Pickens Stadium, it was a Big 12 victory they got.
The OSU defense played stellar after the Pokes fell behind 14-0 due to Texas Christian University takeaways as it kept the Horned Frogs scoreless the final 39:22 of the game to win going away by the score of 36-14.
“Our defense was terrific throughout the game,” said Mike Gundy, OSU's coach. “That was the difference. I thought our defensive line got pressure on their quarterback a number of times. We're healthy now, and our pass rush is getting better. We defended the deep ball much better in this game like we had in the two games before this. Earlier this season, we were poor on [defending] the deep ball. I thought our guys did a good job of covering down on the shorter throws [by TCU] on third and fourth downs. The leadership with our defensive players was really good. I'm proud of our guys getting turnovers, and we made a couple of big plays late. I felt good about our defense. My concern was whether we could generate enough offense to match it. As the game went on, we gained more confidence in our defense. That allowed us to be more conservative on offense, but I think what sparked us was our defense. They played so well that it finally allowed our offense to get going.”
