ANAMA — High school softball returned to LeFlore County Thursday night. Panama High School is having its high school sumnmer softball league, which will take place every Thursday night in June. Several area teams including Panama, Poteau, Heavener, Wister, Whitesboro, Keota, Vian and Roland took the field to get a head start on 2012 fast-pitch softball season, which will begin Aug. 7.
“The Panama Summer League gives us an opportunity to see how our freshmen will fit into our team, and how our upper classmen will fill vacancies left by last year's seniors,” one coach said. “We are looking forward to playing some teams that we don't usually see during our regular season play.”
Opening night had perfect softball weather, which was a welcomed relief from the high temperatures that usually accompany summer softball. Several parents and fans were pulling on their hoodies and wrapping up in blankets by the end of the games.
Editor's Note — If the complete monthlong schedule of games in the league can be emailed (sports@poteaudailynews.com) or faxed (918-647-8198) to us by noon Wednesday, next Thursday's schedule of games will be published.
