Nothing is nicer that to get accolades from your peers for the job you do, just ask several members of the PDN staff. The Poteau Daily News was honored with several awards during the annual Oklahoma Press Association’s convention awards dinner June 8, at the Reed Center in Midwest City. During the awards dinner longtime PDN Business Manager, Paula Midgely, was inducted into the Quarter Century Club. The club is for those employees who have been in the newspaper business for 25 years or more with at least 10 of those years being with an Oklahoma
Newspaper. In 1987, back when The Poteau Daily News had “compositors,” the newspaper hired 20-year-old Midgley. She worked in layout, then went to college to study business administration. In 1994, she
graduated and became the business manager. After 25 years she is retiring this year from the newspaper. She is currently studying to become a teacher. She and her husband, George, have six children. “I grew up here, I raised my kids here,” she said. “I’m going to miss it, but I’m excited to make a change, too.” Also announced during the awards dinner were the winners of the Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the OPA. Poteau Daily News Sports Editor, David Seeley was honored with a third place award in the category of Sports Coverage. The contest judges complimented Seeley on his writing skills as well as the scope of his coverage. The newspaper also received a third place award in the category of Sales Promotion for the special sections produced by PDN during the OK Kids Midget State Baseball Tournament held in Poteau in July 2011. The newspaper put out a special four page broadsheet section covering the tournament every night during the event, as well as a
special tournament wrap-up section. The judges stated that the promotion was successful due in part to its involvement in supporting the community. PDN staff member Ken Milam was given an honorable mention by the judges in the In-Depth Enterprise event for his contribution to the commemorative 911 section put out by the PDN. The paper did not place in
the event but received significant praise from the judges for the section. Managing Editor Regina Smith was honored during a luncheon at the convention earlier Friday as being one of the winners of the Editorial Contest conducted by the OPA and sponsored by the Oklahoma Natural Gas Company. Smith won a first-place award in June 2011 for an editorial she had written. All the winners of the monthly contests were honored during the luncheon.
