Pirates get basketball season started tonight at Stilwell

December 20, 2013

One week ago this afternoon, fans were sending off the Poteau Pirates football team on its way to play for the Class 4A state title. Tonight, the Pirates will get to begin their basketball season with an 8 p.m. contest at Stilwell. The Lady Pirates (2-1) will play the Lady Indians at 6:30 tonight.
“We've had a lot in gym, but we had a lot who played football this year,” Poteau boys coach Scott Nelke said. “We're not getting a late start. Because of the weather, a lot of teams have only played two or three games, so we're not too far behind. We're anxious to get the season going. We're just ready to tip it off, but it's a tough one to go tip it off against Stilwell. It's a long road, and we're just ready to get it started.”
The Pirates were 13-13 last season, and only lost three players from last year's team.
