Just after the Poteau Pirates had perhaps their best football game of the year against the Muldrow Bulldogs Thursday night at Costner Stadium, a bit of bad news came across the internet that might throw a major glitch into their playoff run. Broken Bow defeated the Sallisaw Black Diamonds by the score of 35-28. That means that if the Pirates even win out, more than likely the final two playoff berths from District 4A-4 will be decided by district points, which are determined by how many points a team wins or loses by each week during district play.
Right now, the only lock is Tulsa Cascia Hall for the Commandos are perfect in district play with a 5-0 record, and they have the maximum number of points (+75).
Here where it starts to get interesting. At the present time, Fort Gibson and Broken Bow are tied for second place with 4-1 records. Fort Gibson has +45 points, while Broken Bow has +37. Sallisaw has a 3-2 record and has +18 points. Poteau has a record of 2-3 with -10 points.
The only way the Pirates can make the playoffs for sure is if they win out against Broken Bow and Tulsa Rogers and win both games by the maximum number of points — which is 15.
Broken Bow still has to play Cascia Hall, and would need to lose by 15 points. That would put the Pirates at a +20 points, while Broken Bow would fall to +7.
It would be to the Pirates' advantage for the Sallisaw Black Diamonds to win their final two games. If they should lose one of those games, that would throw the race into a 3-way tie for third and fourth place. You can only imagine the difference possibilities that are still on the board. The playoff break down would then cause the most powerful computers to blow their circuits.
