On Aug. 9, all high school football teams began practice with the hopes that they would make not only the postseason but win state. Two LeFlore County football teams are essentially playing a playoff game when the Pocola Indians (5-4, 1-4 in District 2A-6) visit the Heavener Wolves (4-5, 2-3) at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Harvey Stadium.
The bottom line is this — the winner will make the playoffs and the loser will have its season end.
“Like I was just telling the kids, the football gods have been with us,” Pocola Coach Rick Lang said. “With what happened two weeks ago (losing to Panama), we still have a chance to go out and make the playoffs. That's all these kids want — the opportunity to go out and prove something, and play for something. That's all we can ask for right now. It's unreal. To have these seniors for as long as we've had them, and for them to make the sacrifices they've had, it's surreal. The playoffs are only 48 minutes away.”
“The kids are in a great mood,” Heavener Coach John Thompson said. “They feel confident. They have confidence in themselves finally that they can play football. They're starting to believe they can win a game. They now know how to win a game. When we get that smell of blood, we need to go for the jugular. Hopefully, we can continue to do that.”
