Playoff time is here for Classes A, B — which caps off another busy weeks of hoops

February 7, 2012

SENIOR NIGHT TONIGHT — Poteau senior Addie Guthrie, right, prepares to take a 3-point shot during Friday night's game against Stilwell at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse. The Lady Pirates and Pirates will have Senior Night tonight when they entertain Muldrow at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse. The upcoming week's schedule is listed in this column. It's hard to believe the playoffs are here. It just seems like we started the season just a while back.
But for the five LeFlore County schools in Classes A (Arkoma and Cameron) and B (Bokoshe, Leflore and Whitesboro), the playoffs will begin Friday and Saturday in district tournaments. The complete schedule is listed at the end of this column.
Class 2A, 3A and 4A District Tournaments will not begin until the end of next week. The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association threw some unexpected match-ups for district tournaments.
In Class 4A, Poteau got to be home again for district tournament — this time against Hilldale.
Our county's two Class 3A teams — Heavener and Spiro — may have been a little shocked, as I was, as to where the OSSAA sent them for their district tournaments. Heavener was sent north up U.S. 59 to the town of Kansas. Spiro was shipped west to Eufaula.
But the biggest changes occurred in Class 2A as the OSSAA re-classified some Class A teams and made them Class 2A. That means that with more teams in that class, district tournaments will have three teams in them as opposed to the customary two teams as in years past.
Two county Class 2A teams, Panama and Wister, got to be hosts for district tournaments. Panama will entertain archrival Pocola and Gore, while Wister will welcome Howe and Fort Towson.
Talihina, the county's other Class 2A team, was sent north to Warner along with Summit Christian.
All I can say is, “Let the fun begin!”
