POCOLA — The two Class 2A District Tournament title games Saturday night at the Pocola High School gym were carbon copies of themselves. Each winner used a fourth-quarter rally to claim victory.
The host Indians, who trailed 43-35 after three periods, outscored the Sallisaw-Central Tigers 20-10 in the final quarter to post a 55-53 come-from-behind victory in the boys district title game.
Unfortunately for another local team, a fourth-quarter rally doomed them. Down 23-18 after three quarters, the Lady Tigers, who the night before eliminated the Pocola Lady Indians 52-38 on Friday night, clawed their way to a 31-28 district-title win over the Panama Lady Razorbacks.
The Indians (16-8), who eliminated the Panama Razorbacks 68-36 on Friday night, will play Oktaha at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Class 2A Regional Tournament at Panama. The winner will not only play for the regional title at 8 p.m. Saturday in Talihina, but will also automatically qualify for next week’s area tournament in Wilburton.
The Lady ’Backs (14-9) will play an elimination game against Quinton at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the regional tournament in Panama.
The Lady Razorbacks must win three games in three days to make it to next week’s Class 2A Area Tournament in Wilburton.
The seasons came to an end for the Razorbacks (12-11) and the Lady Indians (8-16) with Friday night’s losses.
