POCOLA — The Pocola Indians held their first football scrimmage of the the 2012 football season Friday night against the Gore Pirates in front of a large crowd at John Carter Field.
The two teams took turns running 10 plays apiece alternating between varsity and junior varsity. On Pocola's second play from scrimmage, sophomore Michael McBride slashed his way through the Pirate defense for a 61-yard touchdown. Four plays, later freshman quarterback Dario Abrego found junior receiver Garrret Howard for a six-yard completion and a first down.
“I wanted the kids to come out with some enthusiasm, and we wanted to see how they were going to react,” Lang said. “We've got quite a few new players in key spots on both sides of the ball. I wanted to see the team get some kind of identity. I think we played in spurts, up and down. We had a few more penalties than what I wanted. I challeged them on that last series on offense that we were not going to be finesse — we were going to be physical, and we go down and score. We just have to learn to put it all together."
