Pocola Indians have first home football game of season tonight against Quinton

September 14, 2012

POCOLA — Rick Lang, Pocola's football coach, was hoping for a game where his Indians didn't have to pull one out of the fire — as in their opener, winning 35-34 over Tulsa Regent Prep with the game-winning score coming with 1:48 left to play. Lang was wanting a game where his team was in control from start to finish, and he got his wish in last Friday night's 49-0 rout of the Haileyville Warriors.
“I was real pleased with how the kids came out,” Lang said. “We talked to them about finishing, eliminating the mistakes and start playing more consistent football. We knew if we did that, good things would happen. We came out and jumped on them early, and we coaches kept telling the players to finish. This team needed that kind of win. It was something we needed to see out of these kids, especially as young as we are. They stepped up to the challenge. I challenged them at halftime to tackle better because we saw sloppy tackling. We really pushed for the shutout. It's been a while since we've had a shutout.”
Now, the Indians (2-0) will get to play their first home regular-season game at 7:30 p.m. tonight at John Carter Field against the Quinton Savages. It will be the first time the Indians have been home since their first scrimmage last month.
“We challenged the kids since it is our first home game,” Lang said. “We're excited about that. We haven't been at home since our Week 1 scrimmage (against Gore). We're just glad to be home.”
The Savages (0-1) lost their only game of the season last week, falling 21-13 to Wilburton after having an open date to begin the season on Aug. 31.
